History of the Bouquet

DJ Simms's picture

It is traditional for the bride to throw her bouquet at the reception and for all single women in attendance to try to catching it. Tradition states that the lucky woman who catches the bouquet is said to be the next in line to get married.

Some say that the tradition started in medieval Europe, when the bride’s wedding dress was considered good luck for other women. After the wedding, the single women would chase the bride and begin to rip off pieces of her dress for good luck. That tradition did not last as wedding dresses became more and more expensive over the years.
Instead of wedding dresses being ripped to shreds, brides began throwing their bouquet. Flowers symbolize fertility, and instead of pulling apart a brides gown, it was much easier to catch a bouquet.
